The BCCI and Dream11 have ended their partnership after the Online Gaming Law was implemented. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that Dream11 will no longer be Team India’s title sponsor. Even though the contract ended early, the Indian cricket board cannot penalise Dream11.
Dream11 became the BCCI’s lead sponsor in 2023, taking over from Byju’s. The company agreed to pay Rs 358 crore to the Indian board two years ago.
Now that the deal is over, the BCCI is looking for a new partner. According to the Indian Express, the board will issue a tender soon.
Representatives from Dream11 informed BCCI CEO Hemang Amin that they cannot continue. Thus, they won’t be sponsoring the team for the Asia Cup, and the BCCI will soon issue a new tender.
The Rs 358 crore contract has a clause that prevents Dream11 from being penalised if a new law stops their core business, so they don’t have to pay anything to the Indian cricket board.
What Did The Bill Say?
The Bill stated that unchecked expansion of online money gaming services has been linked to illegal activities such as financial fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, and sometimes financing terrorism, posing threats to national security, public order, and the integrity of the state.
Dream11’s Presence In the Cricketing Circle
Dream11 is a major name in cricket sponsorship, supporting several IPL teams and top players like MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah. In 2020, when Vivo withdrew due to India-China tensions, Dream11 took over as the IPL’s title sponsor.
The company is also the official fantasy partner of the Caribbean Premier League and the main sponsor of New Zealand’s Super Smash T20 competition. Unlike the IPL, these tournaments lack strong financial backing, which means they could face difficulties if Dream11 withdraws.
