After not getting a chance to play for India in the last two years, 37-year-old Cheteshwar Pujara decided to call time on his cricket career on Sunday, August 24. Pujara, who played 103 Tests for India from 2010 to 2023, finished his career with 7195 runs. He scored 19 centuries and 35 fifties for Team India in the whites. During his 13-year-long Test career, Pujara played many top knocks for the Indian team and also played a big role in India’s famous series wins in Australia and the West Indies.
During his 103-match-long Test career, Pujara scored 2074 runs in 25 games against the Australian team.
According to Pujara, he loved playing against the Baggy Greens because the Aussies are always a challenging side, and their players never allow opponents to win easily.
“Love playing vs tough opponents. Australia are always been a challenging side; they never allow you to win easily. Even if victory is near, they make you work hard for runs. You need to be mentally & physically strong, well prepared,” Pujara told Cricbuzz.
During the thread shared by Cricbuzz on X, Pujara also opened up about the toughest bowlers he faced.
In his list, Pujara included Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Pat Cummins and James Anderson.
“Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel at their peak. Facing them in South African conditions was very challenging. Also, Jimmy Anderson in English conditions, when he was at his best, getting a lot of movement in the air and even off the pitch. And then someone like Pat Cummins has also been very challenging,” Pujara said.
Steyn played 14 Tests against India and picked up 65 wickets, whereas Morkel finished his career with 58 wickets in 17 red-ball matches against the Indian team. Cummins has so far dismissed 75 Indian batters in 18 Test matches, and Anderson removed 149 Indian batters in 39 Test matches.
When quizzed about the toughest tour, the right-handed batter who made the No. 3 position his own for India in the five-day format of the game mentioned England.
“England has been the toughest. Especially when they used to produce those green-top pitches with Anderson and Broad in their bowling lineup.”
