Former India spinner Maninder Singh has made a bold prediction about world No. 1 ODI batter Shubman Gill. According to him, the BCCI selectors have decided to appoint Gill as the next all-format captain of the Indian men’s cricket team, which is why he was appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2025.

Gill, who last played a T20I for India on July 30, 2024, was included in India’s 15-member Asia Cup 2025 squad on August 19 as vice-captain.

“See, I feel that the selectors have basically decided that he is going to be our future captain. And if he is going to be our future captain, then you better make him the vice-captain because Surya Kumar Yadav may have just another two years of T20 cricket, and then you have Gill ready under him,” Maninder was quoted as saying by PTI Videos.

Gill’s inclusion in the Asia Cup 2025 squad meant there was no place for Yashasvi Jaiswal, and BCCI selectors also ignored Shreyas Iyer.

Maninder expressed his disappointment over the omission of Jaiswal and Iyer.

“See, I was a little disappointed not to see these two names. Jaiswal, I think, is ready for any format, and he should be there in any team. As far as Iyer is concerned, I mean, you know, I really don’t know why he keeps getting left out of the Indian side because he’s such a fantastic player and such a positive player and contributes to the team,” he said.

“But then this has been happening for years. And when another couple of years go by, you don’t give him a chance, you’ll find somebody else, and you’ll forget about all these things. But that shouldn’t happen,” he added.

Iyer, who last played a T20I match for India on December 3, 2023, against Australia in Bengaluru, made a case for selection in India’s T20I squad for the Asia Cup by scoring 604 runs in 17 matches of IPL 2025 for Punjab Kings. But despite his super show, the right-handed batter from Mumbai was not considered by Indian selectors.
