Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed the Pretoria Capitals’ head coach for the upcoming fourth season of the SA20, in what would be a maiden coaching role for an Indian cricketer in the South African T20 league. The tournament would begin on December 26.
Ganguly takes over from Jonathan Trott, stepping into the head coach’s role after serving as director of cricket for JSW Sports, the parent company of the Pretoria Capitals, since last year.
Pretoria have experienced mixed fortunes in the SA20 till now, topping the group stage in the inaugural season but falling short in the final against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
In the following two seasons (2023-24 and 2024-25), Pretoria endured average campaigns, finishing fifth on both occasions and missing out on the playoffs.
Pretoria Capitals will be banking on Ganguly’s appointment to change their fortunes. This marks the former India skipper’s maiden stint as a head coach.
From 2015 to 2019, Ganguly served as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal. He took up the role of mentor with the Delhi Capitals in 2019 but stepped away to assume the presidency of the BCCI.
Since last year, Ganguly has been serving as JSW’s director of cricket, a role that brought him closer to coaching responsibilities within their teams, which include the Delhi Capitals in both IPL and WPL.
Meanwhile, Dinesh Karthik remains the lone Indian to have played in the SA20, representing the Paarl Royals in the 2024-25 season.
Other than him, Piyush Chawla, Siddharth Kaul, Ankit Rajpoot, Sarul Kanwar, Anureet Singh Kathuria, Ansari Marouf, Mahesh Ahir, Nikhil Jaga, Mohamed Faidh, KS Naveen, Imran Khan, Venkatesh Galipelly and Atul Yadav have also submitted their names for the draft ahead of the auction.
Chawla was a member of India’s victorious teams at the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, finishing his career with three Tests, 25 ODIs and seven T20Is.
