Cheteshwar Pujara has retired from all forms of cricket. He hangs his boots as one of India’s all-time greats, with 7195 runs in 103 Tests, comprising 55 fifties and 19 centuries. (PC: AFP)
For those who watched him, he was one of the best number three batters of his era, an understated master of pure Test batting, full of attrition and patience in an era when the game was getting quicker.(PC: PTI)
His impact was such that raw stats cannot justify it. But there are some records, very unique ones, which define him much better, and are so difficult to break that they could be his legacy forever.(PC: AFP)
Record 1: Cheteshwar Pujara is the only Indian to face over 500 balls in a Test innings. He achieved the feat in the 2017 Ranchi Test vs Australia, batting 525 balls for 202 runs.(PC: AFP)
Pujara scored his double century off 672 minutes, hitting 21 fours at a strike rate of 38.47. While 11 Indians have faced 400+ balls, none apart from Pujara have even crossed the 500-mark. The next best is Rahul Dravid’s 495 balls.(PC: AFP)
Record 2: This is a unique one. Only 13 batters to have batted on all five days of a Test, and Pujara is the only one among them to finish with under 75 runs.
It happened against Sri Lanka in the 2017 Kolkata Test, where Pujara scored 52 and 22 runs as rain interruptions gave him batting opportunities across all days. 13 instances in thousands of Test innings is so rare that someone not even crossing 75 might be impossible to achieve. (PC: PTI/AP)
Record 3: Pujara has also scored 18 double centuries in First-Class cricket (domestic plus Tests). That’s the fourth best after Don Bradman, Wally Hammmond and Patsy Hendren. It’s the highest in India. (PC: PTI/AP)
The second-best is so far away — Vijay Merchant at 11 — and Test specialists are so rare in the country now that it seems unimaginable that someone would be able to break this record.(PC: X)
Pujara also had an extremely successful domestic First-Class career. In fact, he was one of the few of the modern era who continued to represent his regional side, Saurastra, despite international success. (PC: PTI/AP)
