The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared one of Cheteshwar Pujara’s best Test knocks — 202 (525) against Australia in the 2017 Border-Gavaskar Trophy — as a tribute to the former number three retiring from all forms of the game on Sunday (August 24).
Pujara hung up his boots with 7195 runs to his name in 103 Tests, including 55 fifties and 19 centuries. He’d always be best remembered for his attrition at the tricky number three spot, with an unmatched ability to play out the new ball and making the game easier for India’s prolific middle-order batters.
“One of Indian cricket’s most resolute and admired Test specialists, @cheteshwar1, has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. Relive one of his prolific knocks against Australia at Ranchi,” BCCI wrote in the tribute post on social media.

It was indeed one of Pujara’s best knocks. The 525 balls he played out still remain the most for an Indian in a Test innings, that too on a pitch that the Australians described as ‘one of the most difficult’ they had played in.
India were 328/6 at one stage, chasing Australia’s 451 in the first innings, but Pujara’s knock meant they went on to score 603/9. The Test was drawn but Pujara was named the Player of the Match.
What then captain Virat Kohli said after the Test can also be considered a tribute in itself.
“You know, sometimes I really feel bad for him,” Kohli said, when asked about Pujara’s contributions, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. “People don’t understand his importance so much in this team and what a valuable player he is for us. He is the most composed player we have in the team, he is willing to grind for his runs, he doesn’t mind batting under pressure, he likes to take the challenge of batting.”
