Delhi wicketkeeper-batter Vansh Bedi was playing in the Nepal Pro Club Championships before the inaugural Delhi Premier League (DPL) came calling. Playing for Purani Dilli 6 last year, the youngster racked up 221 runs in eight matches, with his fearless stroke play drawing plenty of attention.

The standout moment was his 41-ball 96 against the East Delhi Riders, which cemented his reputation as a big-hitting batter. Across nine matches, he hammered 22 sixes, averaging 44.2 at a strike rate of 185.71.

That breakout season earned him a dream chance in the IPL 2025, where the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) picked him up for ₹55 lakh after a bidding tussle with the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In a conversation with News18 CricketNext, 22-year-old Vansh opened up about leading Purani Dilli 6, his time in Chennai, his memorable chats with former India captain MS Dhoni and the learnings from his IPL debut.

How has the experience been leading Purani Dilli 6? How big is the responsibility?

It’s been great. This is my first time as captain and I’ve tried to learn from the last season, especially how Lalit (Yadav) bhaiya handled things. So far, it has not been a dream tournament for us, but I am really enjoying the responsibility, and I am confident we’ll bounce back.

How was the experience of being in the Chennai Super Kings dressing room?

Incredible. Honestly, it’s something every cricketer should experience once. The kind of legacy and culture you absorb there makes you fall in love with the team all over again. Being in that dressing room was a special feeling.

As a wicketkeeper-batter, what tips did MS Dhoni share with you?

A lot. He spoke about staying calm in situations you cannot control. It was not just technical advice; most of it was about handling pressure and keeping a clear head. He is someone who focuses a lot on mental strength.

A video of you with Dhoni and Virat Kohli went viral. What was that chat about

(Laughs) They were standing one step below me, so I jokingly told them, “We’re all equals, come up here with me.” They had a good laugh about it.

How much has the IPL experience helped you in the DPL?

It has helped a lot. When you play at that level, you understand that ups and downs are part of the game. It teaches you to accept tough days along with the good ones. I won’t say I don’t feel it, but I’ve learned to handle it better.

You picked up an injury midway through the IPL. How tough was the recovery?

Mentally, it was very tough, especially since it came right before my debut. But I am really grateful to Chennai, they supported me throughout, whether it was medical care or financial help. That backing meant a lot during a tough phase.
