Sachin Tendulkar played 200 Tests, 463 ODIs and 1 T20I for India during his 24-year-long international career, which kicked off with a match against Pakistan in Karachi on November 15, 1989, and concluded on November 16, 2013, in Mumbai against the West Indies. During his 664-match-long career, Tendulkar scored 100 centuries and played many top knocks for Team India, which are still fresh in fans’ memories.

Tendulkar’s knock of 98 runs against Pakistan in the 2003 World Cup Super Six match and his innings against Australia at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in 1998 are among the favourite ones of fans, but when Tendulkar was asked to pick his favourite innings of all time by a fan during Reddit’s AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Monday (August 25), he ignored the two ODI knocks and instead picked his innings of 103 runs against England in the fourth innings of the 2008 Chennai Test.

“There are many, but the most meaningful was against England in Chennai in 2008,” Tendulkar wrote.

In the 2008 Chennai Test, England set a target of 387 runs for India to chase down in the fourth innings, and riding on Tendulkar’s 103-run knock from 196 balls, India achieved the objective in 98.3 overs for the loss of four wickets.

The match was a special one for India, as it took place after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

Tendulkar reveals why he promoted Dhoni

India faced Sri Lanka in the final of the 2011 ODI World Cup at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the title decider played on April 2, 2011, Men in Blue under the leadership of MS Dhoni chased down the target of 274 runs in 48.2 overs for the loss of four wickets. In the summit clash, Gautam Gambhir scored 97 runs from 122 balls, and Dhoni remained unbeaten on 91 runs from 79 balls as a No. 5 batter.

In the 2011 World Cup final, Dhoni came out to bat ahead of Yuvraj Singh in the run chase, and that decision stunned everyone because Yuvraj was India’s best player in that tournament, whereas Dhoni was horribly out of form with the bat.

While Dhoni on multiple occasions in the past revealed that it was his decision to promote himself over Yuvraj in the final, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag in the past claimed that it was Tendulkar’s idea to promote Dhoni over Yuvraj.

During a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session, Tendulkar was asked by a fan about the reason for promoting Dhoni over Yuvraj, and in reply he said, “There were 2 reasons. The left right batting combination would have upset the two off spinners, also Muralitharan had played for CSK (from 2008-2010) and MS had played him for 3 seasons in the nets.”

Dhoni’s decision to promote himself in the run chase proved to be a masterstroke as he added 109 runs with Gambhir for the fourth wicket to help India bounce back from 114 for 3 in 21.4 overs. After Gambhir’s dismissal, Dhoni added unbeaten 54 runs for the fifth wicket with Yuvraj, who made 21 runs from 24 balls.
