The decision on Bengaluru’s replacement as a venue for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup is expected to be finalised later this week.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that it is unable to obtain the necessary clearances to host matches. As a result, the International Cricket Council (ICC), in consultation with the BCCI, has been working to identify an alternative venue.
Bengaluru is, for the moment, scheduled to host the tournament opener between India and Sri Lanka on September 30, matches between England and South Africa (October 3) and India and Bangladesh (October 26), the second semifinal on October 30, and possibly the final on November 2. But the city was ruled out after the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was deemed unfit to host World Cup games following the stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s victory parade after winning the IPL in June this year.
With the World Cup opener barely six weeks away, time is running out to complete logistical arrangements. Sportstar understands that Thiruvananthapuram has emerged as the front-runner, while Guwahati is also in contention to stage additional matches.
According to a source familiar with the matter, a formal announcement will be made “in a couple of days.”
