Prithvi Shaw’s decision to move from Mumbai to Maharashtra has already shown benefits, with the 25-year-old making a stylish debut with the bat. During his first appearance for his new team at the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, Shaw impressed with a brilliant century against Chhattisgarh. Demonstrating his usual flair and aggressive stroke play, he scored 111 before being dismissed, a knock that not only gave Maharashtra a strong position but also marked a significant personal achievement after a long period of struggle that raised doubts about his career path. Shaw continued his impressive performance with a composed 66 off 96 deliveries against TNCA President’s XI, proving his hunger for runs and his ability to dominate bowlers remain intact.
What Did Maharashtra Selector Say About Prithvi Shaw?
Maharashtra chief selector Akshay Darekar was particularly impressed by Shaw’s start, pointing out that his batting technique and natural talent were never in question. Darekar credited Shaw’s renewed focus on fitness as a crucial part of his comeback.
“Prithvi is on the right track. There was never an issue with his batting. He is focused and keen to make a statement with his bat. He is completely committed to his fitness too and has been doing his training drills religiously,” Darekar was quoted as saying to Mid-Day.
“We know he always likes to play aggressively and dominate the opposition. And he batted the same way in his first two matches for Maharashtra at the Buchi Babu Tournament. His class was evident in both those knocks. He is hungry to score big runs. The target is to help Maharashtra reach the Ranji knockouts through his strong performances. The more he performs, the better it will be, not just for our team but also for him, as he can achieve his individual goals too. He realises that this upcoming season will be crucial for him and he wants to make it count,” he added.
These two innings came at a crucial time for Shaw. The year 2024 was forgettable for him as he fell down Mumbai’s pecking order due to concerns about his fitness and discipline. Additionally, he went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega-auction, highlighting how much his stock had fallen. However, his promising start for Maharashtra suggests he has turned a corner. The team switch, combined with a refreshed mindset, has given him a clean slate. With the domestic season approaching, Shaw will be eager to maintain this momentum, rebuild his reputation, and remind the cricketing world of his exceptional talent that once made him one of India’s most promising young players.
