Matthew Breetzke creates history
South Africa batter Matthew Breetzke continued his run-scoring spree with a fourth consecutive fifty score in One-Day Internationals. The right-handed batter on Thursday scripted history with an 88-run knock against Australia in the second ODI in Mackay, becoming the first batter in ODI history to start his career with four consecutive scores of 50+. His innings was laced with 8 fours and 2 sixes, which was ended by Nathan Ellis in the 31st over.
Breetzke’s knock also let him equal the record for four 50+ scores in the first four ODI innings, previously held by Navjot Singh Sidhu. The former India batter, who made his ODI debut in 1987 against Australia, had smashed 73 (vs Australia), 75 (vs New Zealand), 51 (vs Australia) and 55 (vs Zimbabwe) in his four ODI innings.
Breetzke, on the other hand, smashed a century on debut and went on to get a fifty-plus score in the next three innings. He already holds the record for the highest score on ODI debut, following his 150 against New Zealand in Lahore earlier this year.
Matthew Breetzke’s first four ODI matches so far:
150(148) vs New Zealand, Lahore
83(84) vs Pakistan, Karachi
57(56) vs Australia, Cairns
88(78) vs Australia, Mackay
Although Sidhu had started off his career with four consecutive 50s as well, those came across 5 matches.
Most Runs After 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th ODI innings
The 26-year-old batter now also holds the record for most runs after first four ODI innings. With 378 runs, he surpassed Temba Bavuma’s tally of 280.

280 – Temba Bavuma (South Africa)

Even before walking out for his 4th ODI innings, Breetzke owned the record for most ODI runs after the first, second and third innings in the history of One-Day Internationals.

150 – After 1st ODI
233 – After 2nd ODI
290 – After 3rd ODI

After early setbacks with Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton dismissed in the powerplay, Matthew Breetzke steadied South Africa’s innings. He built useful stands with Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs, though he may regret not capitalising further after getting well set, leaving potential runs unscored for the Proteas.
