Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha could become national selector from South Zone.

Former India cricketer Pragyan Ojha could become part of the men’s team selection committee. According to media reports, the Ojha might replace Sridharan Sharath from South Zone.

The BCCI on Friday invited applications for two positions in its men’s selection committee a day after it emerged that the head of panel Ajit Agarkar’s contract has been extended by a year till June 2026.

Ojha played 24 Tests, 18 ODIs and six T20Is between 2009 and 2013. He was quite lethal in pitches that offered turn and picked 113 wickets in Tests including seven five-wicket hauls. He took 21 wickets in ODIs and 10 in T20Is.

Ojha represented two franchises during his IPL career – Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians – and finished with 89 wickets at an economy of 7.36 from 92 games. He retired from international cricket in February 2020.

BCCI Invites Applications

The board has invited applications for two posts while laying down the eligibility criteria. To be eligible, a candidate should have played minimum 7 Tests or 30 First-Class matches or 10 ODIs and 20 First-Class matches. Additionally, the candidate should have retired from the game at least 5 years prior and must not have been a member of any Cricket Committee of the BCCI for a cumulative period of 5 years.

Currently, the selection committee is headed by former India fast bowler Agarkar. It also comprises Shiv Sunder Das (Central Zone), Subroto Banerjee (East Zone), Ajay Ratra (North Zone) and Sharath (South Zone).

The new appointments will have to be ratified at BCCI’s annual general meeting.

“The contracts of selectors are renewed annually. We have not yet identified which selectors will be replaced, but that process will be undertaken soon,” a BCCI official wa quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Agarkar’s Contract Renewed

With the Indian team ending their ICC trophy drought by winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and then clinching the Champions Trophy earlier this year, Agarkar has been rewarded with contract renewal. According to reports, he was offered an extension prior to the start of this year’s IPL which he accepted.
