Four years after his last appearance, veteran Zimbabwe cricketer Brendan Taylor played his first ODI on Friday. Taylor made his international comeback earlier this year during a Test against New Zealand after having served a ban that lasted three-and-a-half years for corruption-related offenses.

On Friday, when Taylor took the field for Zimbabwe in the first ODI against Sri Lanka, he became the player with the longest ever career in the format among those who made their debuts in the 21st century (1 January, 2001).

Taylor, whose last ODI was against Ireland in September 2021, played the first ODI of his career on April 20, 2004, also vs Sri Lanka at Bulawayo. It’s now 21 years and 132 days (and counting) since the Zimbabwean made his ODI debut.

Taylor Surpasses Williams

Taylor has now overtaken the previous record held by his captain and teammate Sean Williams (19 years and 300 days) for the longest career among players who made debut in the 21st century and is the first to stretch it beyond 20 years.

Tendulkar Leads Overall List

With that, Taylor has also broken into the top-three list of players with longest ODI careers. Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar leads this list with a career that spanned 22 years and 91 days followed by Sri Lanka great Sanath Jayasuriya (21 years and 84 days).

The 39-year-old though ended up hurting his finger while keeping the stumps in the second over of Sri Lankan innings. He went off the field and was replaced by Clive Manande.

Taylor’s ODI Record

The veteran wicketkeeper-batter has been serving Zimbabwe cricket for over two decades now. He’s played 35 Tests and 206 ODIs now. His 11 ODI centuries is a Zimbabwe record.

With 6684 runs from 203 innings, Taylor is also the second-highest run-getter in ODIs for his country and is behind the legendary Andy Flower.

Taylor has scored 2371 runs in Tests including six centuries and 12 fifties. He’s also played 45 T20Is and scored 934 runs at a strike-rate of 118.22.
