Teenage cricket sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made waves in this year’s IPL at just 14, embraced the opening ceremony of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 12 in Visakhapatnam. The Rajasthan Royals youngster, who became an overnight star in cricket, joined celebrated names like badminton legend Pullela Gopichand, former India hockey skipper Dhanraj Pillay, and kabaddi stalwart Pardeep Narwal for the grand start to the tournament.

For Suryavanshi, the night was special in more ways than one. “I have been playing kabaddi since I was around five or six years old, so it felt really good returning to the mat and to watch a match live for the first time,” he said.

“While I have enjoyed kabaddi and table tennis, cricket has always been my first love. In PKL, I support Patna Pirates because it’s my home team, and I also admire the Bengaluru Bulls for Pawan Sehrawat, the Hi-Flyer.”

On the mat, the action lived up to the hype. Tamil Thalaivas edged past Telugu Titans 38-35 in a nail-biting clash. Arjun Deshwal set the tone with the season’s first Super 10, while Pawan Sehrawat contributed 9 points, including a match-sealing Super Raid. Bharat Hooda, meanwhile, stood tall for the Titans, scoring 9 raid points and reaching the milestone of 600 career raids. Despite an early setback, Thalaivas clawed their way back to clinch the opener.

The following game brought history with it, as Puneri Paltan and Bengaluru Bulls played out PKL’s first-ever league-stage tie-breaker after finishing level at 32-32. Defending champions Paltan prevailed 6-4 in the decider. Aditya Shinde impressed with 9 points and a Super Raid, while Gaurav Khatri picked up a High Five. The Bulls had their own heroes in Akash Shinde, who bagged a Super 10, and Ankush Rathee, who also earned a High Five. But when it mattered most, Aslam Inamdar’s clutch raid and Dheeraj’s key tackle sealed the night for Puneri Paltan.
