India’s Test captain and T20 vice-captain, Shubman Gill, has reported to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for his fitness assessment. According to PTI, the 25-year-old will begin training before flying to Dubai for the Asia Cup.
The Indian squad is expected to assemble in the UAE on September 4, ahead of their opening clash against the UAE on September 9.
Rohit, Siraj Join Pre-Season Camp
OSI skipper Rohit Sharma and pacer Mohammed Siraj have also checked in at the CoE for their pre-season assessments, which are likely to be completed by Sunday. Rohit, who has stepped away from T20Is and Tests, will be watched closely as he prepares for the new season. The 38-year-old is expected to travel to Australia for the ODI series in October, but his participation in India A’s one-dayers against Australia A later that month remains uncertain.
Gill Back After Illness
Gill, who was forced to miss the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal due to the flu, was named captain of the North Zone squad but had to pull out. After recuperating at his Chandigarh home, he has now linked up with the support staff in Bengaluru. Unlike previous years when the squad assembled in Mumbai, this time, players will fly to Dubai in phases from their respective bases.
Jitesh, Others Set to Arrive
Wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma has also reached the CoE for preparations. PTI understands that Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shardul Thakur are also expected to join in the coming days for their mandatory assessments. Thakur, leading West Zone in the Duleep semis, along with standby players Jaiswal and Sundar, is set to feature in the latter stages of the domestic tournament before regrouping with the national setup.
