The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia said the final of the ongoing Duleep Trophy will be telecast live for the fans, even though the rest of the tournament is completely off-air.
Fans have expressed frustrations online that there’s no way to watch one of the premier domestic competitions of the country, despite the BCCI having abundant resources for an arrangement. However, Saikia said that the board has an arrangement of only 100 days of domestic cricket with the broadcasters.
He reiterated the board’s commitment to domestic cricket, including by pushing international stars’ participation in it.
“There will be a live telecast of the final of the Duleep Trophy,” Saikia was quoted as saying by The Times of India. “We have an agreement with our broadcaster to ensure live telecast of 100 days of domestic cricket, which means that all our domestic tournaments are covered live. The BCCI gives utmost importance to domestic cricket, which is why you will see that almost all the India players are in action in these matches.”
Many international stars have been in action in this season of the Duleep Trophy, a zonal competition played in the First-Class format. In the recent games between Central Zone and North-East Zone and North Zone and East Zone, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmaed, and Mukesh Kumar were in action.
The BCCI has issued a diktat to all international stars, asking them to be present for domestic games whenever they are free from international assignments. A failure to do so got Shreyas Iyer and Ishaan Kishan out of their central contracts for a few months before being reinstated later.
Meanwhile, the board was also reportedly miffed at the South Zone selectors for not picking the likes of KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj in the squad for the tournament. They even sent a now-leaked email to all state boards reminding them of a need to pick these stars to maintain the standard of the Duleep Trophy but the South Zone team didn’t oblige.
