Legendary India batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirements from T20Is on June 29, 2024, and in May 2025, they stepped away from Test cricket as well. Ever since they retired from the five-day format of the game, fans and experts time and again have questioned their future in international cricket. While it is believed that both the batters want to play for India in the ODI World Cup 2027, it is still not sure if they will be part of BCCI’s plans for the 50-over mega-event. There is still more than a couple of years’ time for the next ODI World Cup, and many greats of the game feel that Rohit and Kohli might struggle with age and fitness.

But when former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara was quizzed about the duo’s future, he said that he doesn’t need to give any advice to them because they are senior players and are very well aware of what needs to be done.

“I don’t need to give any advice because they are some of the best players in white-ball cricket. Even if they are playing just one format, they are experienced enough to know what is expected of them,” said Pujara during The Indian Express Idea Exchange.

“They are such talented players. Look at the records Virat and Rohit have. They also know when the right time is for them to call it quits. They understand the level of commitment required, and if they are fit enough, they can carry on playing international cricket for a long time,” he added.

Rohit and Kohli last played an ODI match for India on March 9, 2025, against New Zealand at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. In the Champions Trophy 2025 final, Rohit scored 76 runs and also won the POTM award, whereas Kohli played a knock of 80-odd runs against Australia in the semifinal match on March 4.

The duo is expected to next take the field for Men in Blue against Australia in October 2025 when the Indian team will travel for a three-match ODI series. The Indian team is also scheduled to play three ODIs against South Africa in December 2025.
