To raise fitness standards, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced the Bronco Test for players aspiring to join the national men’s team. Though new to cricket, the test is a staple in rugby, known for challenging an athlete’s endurance, stamina, and recovery.

What Is the Bronco Test?

With the current volume of cricket, elite fitness levels are more important than ever. The Bronco Test pushes players to their cardiovascular and mental limits, reflecting the physical demands of modern cricket.

The setup is simple but tough. Four cones are placed at 0m, 20m, 40m, and 60m. Each set involves sprinting to the 20m mark and back, then to the 40m mark and back, and finally to the 60m mark and back.

This shuttle pattern covers 240 metres per set, and players must complete five sets, totalling 1,200 metres. There are no rest intervals; the goal is to complete the course as quickly as possible, and the total time is recorded to assess the athlete’s aerobic performance.

The Bronco Test is not just a physical exercise; it measures a player’s ability to sustain high-intensity efforts, especially those involving repeated directional changes and quick acceleration. These are essential actions when sprinting between wickets or chasing a ball in the field.

Additionally, this test challenges mental resilience. Enduring continuous high-speed sprints without rest requires sharp focus and strong mental resolve, vital during intense game situations.

Unlike the Yo-Yo Test, which focuses on intermittent endurance with recovery periods, the Bronco Test emphasizes continuous aerobic endurance and sustained output, simulating the relentless pace of modern cricket.

With this new standard, BCCI aims to maintain the Indian team’s peak physical performance on the global stage.
