Star India spinner Ravi Bishnoi has said that it was shocking to see Rohit Sharma and ace batter Virat Kohli retire from Tests without getting a farewell match, adding that they might get one when they hang up their boots from ODIs, but it was shocking to see them retire within a few days.
Rohit and Virat’s decision, announced around two weeks before the selection meeting for the England Tests, stunned world cricket. Rumours had been going around since India’s disappointing tour Down Under, but no one saw it coming all of a sudden, in between the IPL.
The duo’s former teammate Bishnoi has admitted that he was shocked by the timing as well as the manner in which Rohit and Kohli exited.
“It is actually shocking, because you always want to see them retire from the field. For such big legends, you want them to leave while still being on the field; that looks much better,” Bishnoi said while speaking on the Game Changers podcast.
And what both of them have done for India, in my view, there is no one even close,” Bishnoi said on the Game Changers podcast.
“You want them to get a good farewell, but maybe they will get that in ODIs as well, whenever they leave, whenever they want to. Because no one can tell you when you will retire,” Bishnoi said.
“But it was shocking when both of them retired, because suddenly you feel like two spots have become empty, who will come and fulfil that,” Bishnoi questioned.
Rohit and Kohli are expected to return to international cricket in the ODI tour of Australia next month.
Rumours are going around that the tour might be Rohit and Kohli’s final appearance in international cricket, although neither has addressed the rumours directly. Both have already started preparing for the tour.
Rohit even cleared the compulsory fitness test at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Sunday, August 31, where he will continue his training for the next five days.
