Former India head coach Rahul Dravid’s son Samit is all set to feature in the Thimmappiah Memorial tournament, which is an invitational event organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association and will start on September 4. It is an inter-state tournament, much like the recently-concluded Buchi Babu Trophy.
Besides Samit, star India pacer Prasidh Krishna and Karnataka batter R Smaran will also feature in the tournament.
Prasidh is returning to action after an eventful tour to England, where he took 14 wickets from the three Tests he played.
With a home Test series against the Windies fast approaching, this four-day format tournament will be a good chance for Prasidh to keep his body tuned to the demands of the red ball game.
Smaran, who was in the standbys, couldn’t get into the South Zone team for the ongoing Duleep Trophy, but he can look forward to beginning the new season with a bang against some top domestic teams such as Mumbai.
Notably, Mumbai will have star India batter Ajinkya Rahane in their ranks for this event to be held across Bengaluru and Mysuru. Siddhesh Lad will lead Mumbai
Smaran was the highest run-getter for Karnataka in last season’s Ranji Trophy, making 516 runs from seven games at a stunning average of 64.5.
Mayank Agarwal is leading the KSCA XI and apart from Prasidh, he will have Indian Premier League regulars Shreyas Gopal, Vidwath Kaverappa and KL Shrijth for company.
Samit is a part of the KSCA Secretary’s XI, which will be led by Karnataka batter Shubhang Hegde. Apart from those two sides, KSCA will field President’s XI and Colts XI as well.
Notably, this will be the first time that the Karnataka players will get game time this season. They didn’t take part in the Buchi Babu invitational and this would be their first tournament ahead of the Ranji Trophy.
Assam will also take part in the invitational tournament and will be led by star India all-rounder Riyan Parag.
