BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla is the first in line to become the next BCCI president, with Roger Binny’s tenure having come to an end, with the administrators pondering if the former can be given a permanent role in the presidency, according to a report in The Times of India.
The BCCI president’s post has remained vacant for the past two months since Binny turned 70. In the interim, Shukla has been handling the responsibilities.
According to the report, Shukla is a ‘serious’ contender for BCCI president, given his immense experience as a cricket administrator.
“Rajeev Shukla stands a very good chance to be elected as the BCCI president in the election due to happen later this month,” a source told The Times of India.
Shukla had chaired BCCI’s apex council meeting on August 27 as Binny, who was a part of the Indian side that won the 1983 World Cup, turned 70, the cut-off age for any BCCI or state association post, on July 19.
Shukla, who served as the chairman of IPL in 2015, was elected unopposed as BCCI vice-president in December 2020.
According to the report, current Indian Premier League chairman Arun Dhumal and former BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhary can be in the fray for the position of BCCI secretary. The current secretary is Devajit Saikia.
The chances of incumbent secretary Saikia continuing in that position can’t be ruled out. According to the report, Chaudhary’s name has been doing the rounds as a probable candidate to become the Indian Premier League chairman as well.
“Apparently, there is some confusion around whether Dhumal is supposed to serve a cooling period. Things will become clearer in the next few days,” the source told The Times of India.
“Saikia has done a good job so far in the almost nine months that he has been in charge, driving BCCI efficiently through a period where a lot has happened, both on and off the field in Indian cricket,” the source added.
