As Novak Djokovic was in the midst of a roaring win over local favourite Taylor Fritz in the US Open men’s singles quarterfinals on Tuesday night, there was a special member among the vociferous crowd watching the Serb icon going through his demolition job.

Legendary India captain MS Dhoni was present at the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York to watch the entertaining, even if one-sided, contest.

Djokovic outshined Fritz 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to enter the semifinals where he will now face former champion Carlos Alcaraz who is eyeing his second Grand Slam title of the year after having won the French Open earlier this year.

Dhoni Hookah Controversy

Meanwhile, a nearly five-year-old interview of former India allrounder Irfan Pathan recently went viral on social media where he was talking about the possible reasons why he lost his place in the national setup. Without taking any names, Pathan said there was lack of communication when he lost his place in the team while indicating that he wasn’t someone who would curry favour in hopes of remaining in the anyone’s good books.

Pathan, whose India career ended in 2012 when he was just 28, recalled his conversation with former captain Dhoni during a series in Australia in 2008.

Pathan had sought clarification from Dhoni about the skipper’s statement in the media where he said the former wasn’t bowling well. Dhoni denied it and instead assured that things are fine.

Pathan then added he wasn’t someone who would hurt his self-respect by asking for explanations again and again before adding that didn’t have the habit of setting up hookah in someone’s room.

Social media users started speculating that it was a subtle dig at Dhoni and it triggered a wave of memes. However, Pathan rejected the connection claiming his statement has been twisted.  “Half decade old video surfacing NOW with a twisted context to the Statement. Fan war? PR lobby?” Pathan he on X.
