In what might come as bad news for Indian cricket fans, the ticket prices for the Indian Premier League will now incur 40% tax, in place of the previous 28%, which will lead to an increase in the overall cost of a ticket, according to a report in ESPNCricinfo. International cricket, though, will be cheaper to watch, with a GST rate drop from 28% to 18%.
The final ticket price, with a base of Rs 1000, has increased from Rs 1280 to Rs 1400. This hike places the Indian Premier League in the nation’s highest Goods and Services Tax slab, grouping it with casinos, race clubs and similar establishments.
Relief appears to be on the horizon for spectators attending international cricket games in India.
Tickets for those games were earlier taxed at the same 28% GST rate as Indian Premier League tickets, but that slab has now been removed.
The Press Information Bureau’s latest circular on the revised tax rates just makes mention of ‘sporting events like the IPL’.
Currently, tickets priced above Rs 500 for other recognised sporting events are subject to 18% GST. Tickets priced under Rs 500 are exempt from the tax.
In the near future, tickets for international games and other state-run leagues may become more affordable.
At present, a ticket to an international cricket match with a base price of Rs 1000 amounts to Rs 1280 after taxes. With this new change, the same price will come down to Rs 1180.
The new rates will take effect from September 22, just a week before the Women’s World Cup, the next international cricket tournament in India. The tickets for the tournament have yet to go on sale.
The all-powerful GST Council on Wednesday announced that all common use items from roti/paratha to hair oil, ice creams and TVs will cost less, while tax incidence on personal health and life insurance will be brought down to nil.
