Gautam Gambhir can finally empathise with his childhood coach Sanjay Bhardwaj.
Gambhir, who is into the second year of his stint as the India men’s cricket team head coach, is now fully aware the challenges that accompany the top job.
And armed with the new experience, he shared a hilarious, self-deprecating post on social media on the occasion of Teacher’s Day, acknowledging the difficulties his childhood coach must’ve endured while handing him cricketing lessons.
“Now I know what you went through coaching me all those years! Happy #TeachersDay!” Gambhir wrote. Irfan Pathan, a former teammate of Gambhir, reacted with laughing emojis.
Gambhir reportedly joined Bhardwaj’s LB Shastri Cricket Club at the age of 10.
Bhardwaj, a Dronacharya awardee, left an indelible impression on his former pupil by showing him the value of hard work something Gambhir acknowledged later in his life.
“When the coach works hard, the students are forced to work hard… When he travelled daily from Rohtak to Delhi by train to coach, I realised only hard work earns you a place with him. He taught me never to give up,” Gambhir had said in an interview with The Times of India.
Childhood Coach Defends Gambhir
Gambhir’s aggressive and no-nonsense attitude has often landed him in controversy. However, Bhardwaj says it’s been part of the former India captain’s habit where he cannot be diplomatic.
“He has had this habit of not being diplomatic. I always told him to be a bit more flexible when it came to that. He stayed very straightforward throughout. He would always say, ‘I want to bank only on my game’. But that honesty and that straightforwardness also hurt him in his career, I feel,” Bhardwaj told The Times of India.
Gambhir and Team India will be back in action at the Asia Cup 2025 in UAE. India will play their tournament opener on September 10 in Dubai.
