Temba Bavuma-led South Africa scripted history, stunning England with a 5-run win in the second ODI at the home of cricket – Lord’s. The victory not only handed the Proteas an assailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match series, but they also won the first bilateral ODI series on English soil after 27 Years. Matthew Breetzke’s record-breaking 85 powered the visitors to a total of 330, which they successfully defended by limiting England to 325/9.

South Africa’s last ODIs series win on an English tour was in 1998, when they defeated Adam Hollioake’s team 2-1 in a 3-match series. Since then, they lost 4 ODI series to England – 2008, 2012, 2017, 2022 – before winning the ongoing one.

This was England’s fourth straight loss to South Africa in the ODIs. They have played 6 bilateral ODI series after the 2023 ODI World Cup and interestingly, England have won just 1 while the Proteas pocketed 5. The former now boast a win percentage of 31.8 in this period (won 7 out of 22 ODIs); only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe from full member teams have a lower win percentage than England.

England’s last four ODIs vs South Africa

Lost with 125 balls to spare (Karachi 2025)

Lost with 175 balls to spare (Leeds 2025)

Lost by 5 runs (Lord’s 2025)

The total of 655 runs set a new record for an ODI at Lord’s. Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs (58) shared a century partnership in just 101 balls, with their stand eventually helping South Africa post 330 for 8 in 50 overs.

England required a record-breaking chase to match India’s 326-8 in 2002, the highest score by a team batting second to win an ODI at Lord’s. However, their batting slumped against the likes of Nandre Burger (3/63) and Keshav Maharaj (2/59) as they fell short by 5 runs.

It was the second closest win margin for South Africa against England in ODIs after the 1-run win in Cape Town in 2000.
