Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has said his son, Yuvraj, dealt with more ‘backstabbers’ than friends in his career, with most people being ‘scared’ of how ‘great’ a player he was. Yograj name-dropped MS Dhoni, too, saying that the legendary India skipper was afraid that Yuvraj would eventually take his ‘chair’.
Yuvraj and Dhoni are still considered two of India’s greatest cricketers. The former was the Player of the Tournament in the 2011 World Cup and one of the best in the 2007 T20 edition, too. But while Dhoni had a career spanning over 550 international matches and his IPL legacy has continued, Yuvraj retired with just over 400 internationals and a slightly underwhelming IPL tenure.
Yograj, who’s known for answering anything asked of him in a non-diplomatic way, has often claimed his son was mistreated in the Indian team. In an interview with InsideSport, he was asked whether Virat Kohli could have helped Yuvraj in the second half of his career; his reply was again quite aggressive.
“As I told you, there are no friends in the sphere of success, money and glory,” he said. “There were always backstabbers, people who wanted to put you down. People were scared of Yuvraj Singh because they were afraid where he would usurp their seats because he was such a great player created by the God Almighty. He has been the greatest of players, who they were scared – right from MS Dhoni, everybody – ‘oh he might take my chair,” Yograj added.
Yuvraj’s career was affected by his failure to grab his chances in Tests over the years and also the fact that he went through a brutal few months during his prime dealing with cancer. Now, he’s a successful businessman, but the topic of ‘what ifs’ in his career keeps coming back.
Dhoni, meanwhile, would be seen playing again soon. He’s likely to be part of Chennai Super Kings’ squad in IPL 2026, though it is widely believed to be his last year.
