BCCI names Shreyas Iyer captain and Dhruv Jurel vice-captain for India A vs Australia A in Lucknow.

The BCCI on Saturday announced the India A squad for two multi-day fixtures against Australia, which will be played later this month. The Indian cricket board has named Shreyas Iyer the captain of the side and appointed wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel his deputy. The series kicks off on September 16, 2025, and the second multi-day event will commence on September 23, 2025. Both matches will take place in Lucknow.
Iyer’s appointment as captain of the India A side certainly hints at his Test return ahead of the home series against West Indies and South Africa in October and November, respectively. Meanwhile, his IPL franchise, Punjab Kings, took to social media to congratulate Iyer, fondly called ‘Sarpanch’.
“Sarpanch Da Raj,” the post read.
Notably, Iyer and Yash Thakur are two players from Punjab Kings who have been selected for the A series against Australia.
“Saade lions will be in action for India A,” the franchise wrote on Instagram.
The BCCI also announced that KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj will be added to the squad for the 2nd multi-day match and will replace two players in the squad after the 1st multi-day match.
Shreyas Iyer, who was not considered for a place in the India A squad for two red-ball matches against England Lions in May-June, is currently playing in the semifinal of the Duleep Trophy 2025 for West Zone against Central Zone in Bengaluru.
N Jagadeesan, who replaced Rishabh Pant in India’s squad for the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, scored 197 runs for South Zone in the first innings of their Duleep Trophy 2025 match against North Zone on Friday, September 5, whereas Gaikwad top-scored for West Zone by amassing a total of 184 runs against Central Zone in Bengaluru on Friday.
Abhimanyu Easwaran, the 30-year-old batter playing for Bengal, who was with the Indian men’s cricket team for the tour of England, did not get to make his debut. He too finds his name in the India A squad.
The bowling unit will be led by Prasidh Krishna and Khaleel Ahmed, with support from spinners Harsh Dubey, Tanush Kotian, and Manav Suthar. The team also features all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and leg-spinner Gurnoor Brar.
