After losing the first couple of ODIs to South Africa, England made a startling comeback on Sunday in a bid to register a consolation win in the 3-match series. Harry Brook & Co. posted a mammoth 414/5 after Joe Root and Jacob Bethell scored centuries, while Jamie Smith and Jos Buttler posted identical scores of 62. This exhilarating performance helped England equal India’s record for 7 400-plus scores in men’s ODIs.

England and India are now the joint second on the list of teams to score the most 400-plus totals in men’s ODIs. South Africa lead the charts, scoring 400 or more on 8 occasions in One-Day Internationals.

400-plus totals in Men’s ODIs

8 – South Africa

7 – India

7 – England

3 – Australia

2 – New Zealand

2 – Sri Lanka

1 – Zimbabwe

England’s all 400-plus scores in ODIs have come after the ICC World Cup 2015, held in Australia. Since then, South Africa achieved it thrice while India did it twice in the 50-over format.

Meanwhile, Jacob Bethell notched up his maiden ODI hundred. He became the third youngest England batter to score a century for England in the format.

Bethell, who will become England’s youngest captain in an ODI series against Ireland later this month, made just six and five in his two Test innings against India.

He fell for one in the series opener against South Africa at Headingley but hit 58 from 40 balls at Lord’s, having been moved up to number four, and maintained that form with an even more dynamic display on Sunday.

While Bethell represents England’s future, the relentless Root is their present, and the batsman’s exquisitely-paced 100 brought him a 19th ODI century.
