Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed ‘full support’ for the national team ahead of the Asia Cup, urging that fans’ criticism can be reserved until after the tournament. However, intriguingly, Naqvi is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), the governing body responsible for organising and smoothly conducting the multi-nation tournament’s 2025 edition in the UAE.

His comment was regarding Pakistan’s entry into the competition on a positive note. The Men in Green won the Tri-series against Afghanistan and the UAE, securing the title with a 75-run victory over the Afghans in the final on Sunday. This was the 10th victory in 14 T20Is for the side under new coach Mike Hesson.

“Congratulations to Team Pakistan on winning the Tri-Series! This is a new but talented team playing fearless and aggressive cricket. Under Head Coach Mike Hesson and his coaching staff, we’ve won 10 out of 14 T20 matches already,” Naqvi wrote in a post on X. “Let’s believe in our boys, coaches, and selectors. Full support to the Greens for the Asia Cup. Criticism and analysis can wait until after the tournament. Right now, they deserve our trust, support, and backing,” he added.

In the Tri-series final, Pakistan set a competitive target of 141/8, which their bowlers defended impressively by dismantling Afghanistan’s batting line-up.

Afghanistan’s batting faltered, largely due to Mohammad Nawaz’s exceptional spin bowling. He dramatically altered the game by taking two wickets in the final two balls of the sixth over, dismissing Darwish Rasooli and Azmatullah Omarzai, leaving Afghanistan struggling at 29/4. Nawaz completed his hat-trick on the first ball of the seventh over by removing Ibrahim Zadran (9).

The spin attack continued to dominate, with Abrar Ahmed and Sufiyan Muqeem claiming two wickets each, as Afghanistan were bowled out for 66, allowing Pakistan to lift the trophy with a commanding performance.

Salman Agha’s side are in the same group as rivals India, the UAE and Oman and will need to finish in the top-two to qualify for the Super-Four stage.
