India’s Virender Sharma to officiate in Asia Cup 2025

Indian umpires Rohan Pandit and Virender Sharma have been included in the match officials panel for the Asia Cup 2025, which kicks off on Tuesday.

In the opening match of the tournament, Afghanistan will face Hong Kong China in a Group B encounter at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Experienced match referees Richie Richardson and Andy Pycroft will lead the team of match officials for the event. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced on Monday that the officials for the Super Four stage and the tournament final will be named later.

The umpires set to officiate the tournament are Ahmad Pakteen (Afghanistan), Asif Yaqoob (Pakistan), Faisal Afridi (Pakistan), Gazi Sohel (Bangladesh), Izatullah Safi (Afghanistan), Masudur Rahman (Bangladesh), Raveendra Wimalasiri (Sri Lanka), Rohan Pandit (India), Ruchira Palliyaguruge (Sri Lanka), and Virender Sharma (India).

India will begin their Group A campaign against the UAE at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 10, followed by a match against Pakistan at the same venue on September 14.

They will then play against Oman at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on September 19.

The 17th edition of the Asia Cup marks India’s first T20I outing since their 4-1 series win against England at home in January. The tournament serves as an important preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, to be held in India and Sri Lanka, where India will compete as the defending champions.

This will be the first major tournament for the Indian team without senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who retired from T20I cricket after last year’s World Cup victory. The duo also retired from Test cricket before the England tour, now limiting their international appearances to the ODI format.

Rohit and Kohli last played for India during their triumphant campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy in March.
