On his 26th birthday, Shubman Gill stands tall as India’s Test captain. From U19 stardom to senior glory, his career is a masterclass in talent and determination.

Shubman Gill has played 55 ODIs, 37 Tests and 21 T20Is.
Happy Birthday, Shubman Gill: One of India’s finest young batting talents, Shubman Gill, celebrates his birthday on Monday, September 8. Born in the year 1999, the teenage prodigy from Punjab turns 26 today. Gill has had an incredible journey from being a prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket to becoming an integral member of the Indian cricket team across formats. His astonishing rise is reflected in his accent as India’s newly appointed Test skipper, who is also seen as a likely successor in ODIs and T20 Internationals.
Gill first made waves in junior cricket, identified as a prodigy by prominent coaches, including the great Rahul Dravid, who soon got him on board in the U19 setup for the 2018 U19 World Cup in New Zealand.
The elegant right-hander vindicated Dravid and the junior selectors’ faith by stamping his authority in India’s very first match against Australia, scoring a terrific 63 off just 54 deliveries, followed by a stand-out 86 in the quarterfinal versus Bangladesh and an unbeaten 102 in the semifinal against arch-rivals Pakistan.
Gill finished the tournament as India’s highest run-getter with 372 runs in six innings at an average of 104.50.
A talent too good for the U19 stage with his ability to dominate pace, bounce and spin, Gill soon consolidated his place in Punjab’s Ranji Trophy side and was advanced into the India A setup, also under Dravid.
In a critical phase in his development, Gill piled on the runs in India and foreign shores. A special player with class and pedigree, Gill got his early taste of international cricket during an ODI series played against New Zealand in early 2019.
The following year, he proved the selectors’ decision to fast-track him into the Test team right with an exceptional debut during the tour of Australia in 2020-21.
Gill played a part in India’s epic 2-1 series win against remarkable odds and produced a critical knock of 91 in the famous Gabba chase to truly announce his arrival on the world stage. The rest, as they say, is history!
