Influential conservative figure Charlie Kirk’s death has bewildered a former international cricketer who wonders why everyone in America “can just have a gun.”
The assassination of influential conservative activist Charlie Kirk has had a global impact drawing universal condemnation. US President Donald Trump has termed the incident as a “dark moment for America.” Kirk, a close ally of Trump, co-founded Turning Point USA which is a youth movement aimed at spreading conservative ideas on American campuses.
The 31-year-old was speaking at an event at a university in Utah when he was shot dead.
Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has reacted to the horrific incident and wonders why America allows easy access to guns to its citizens.
“RIP Charlie Kirk. I’ll never understand America and why everyone can just have a gun,” Du Plessis, who is an active T20 cricketer, posted on X.
Kirk was answering questions during the event at the Utah Valley University (UVU), dressed in a white T-shirt with Freedom written on it. As per reports, this was the first of 15 scheduled events across the country.
According to eyewitnesses, Kirk was responding to a query on “transgender shooters, mass shooters, and in the midst of that, the shot rang out.”
Kirk’s wife and his two kids were at the scene.
As per AFP, two men were initially detained but were released after questioning.
Trump Promises Crackdown
Trump has vowed to carry out a crackdown.
“My administration will find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity, and to other political violence, including the organizations that fund it and support it,” the US president said.
As per the authorities, the shot was fired from the roof of a building and that they are scanning the CCTV footage to identify the suspect who is said to have been “dressed in dark clothing”.
Kirk collapsed after being shot before being stretchered away by his security detail.
“As soon as that shot went out, he fell back. Everybody hit the deck… a lot of people started screaming, and then everybody started running,” former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who was at the event, told Fox News.
