India defeated United Arab Emirates by nine wickets in a dramatic Asia Cup 2025 clash, highlighted by Suryakumar Yadav’s sportsmanship.
There was no shortage of drama during India’s Asia Cup 2025 Group A clash against the United Arab Emirates at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, even though the result itself was one-sided.
The Controversial 13th Over
The incident unfolded in the 13th over of UAE’s innings. Junaid Siddique, who was facing Shivam Dube, stepped out of his crease after the bowler’s towel slipped during delivery. He appeared to gesture toward the fallen towel rather than attempt a run.
Sensing an opportunity, wicketkeeper Sanju Samson collected the ball cleanly and fired an underarm throw at the stumps, catching Siddique outside his crease. The square-leg umpire referred it upstairs, and replays confirmed Siddique would have been run out.
But India called off the review. Why?
Spirit of the Game Prevails
Technically, the ball could have been called dead under Law 20.4.2.7, which states that umpires shall declare “dead ball” if the striker is distracted by any movement or noise while preparing to receive a delivery. Although no such call was made, India captain Suryakumar Yadav intervened, asking for the appeal to be withdrawn.
“It wasn’t in the spirit of the game,” Suryakumar signaled, allowing Siddique to continue batting. The gesture drew applause from the Dubai crowd and commentators alike. Ironically, Siddique was dismissed off the very next legal delivery, and UAE collapsed soon after for 57 runs in 13.1 overs.
India Wrap Up in Record Time
Chasing just 58, India stormed to a nine-wicket win in only 4.3 overs, making it one of their fastest run chases in Asia Cup history. Abhishek Sharma hammered 30 off 16 balls, while vice-captain Shubman Gill calmly finished unbeaten on 20.
The entire contest—both innings combined—lasted just 17.4 overs, wrapping up in under two hours. India now turn their focus to their blockbuster clash against Pakistan on September 14 at the same venue.
