England’s white-ball/Bazball cross-over took full flight on Friday as Harry Brook’s men broke a heap of T20I world records, breaching the 300-run barrier against South Africa in the second match at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Led by a belligerent stand by openers Jos Buttler and Phil Salt, England sent the Proteas pack on an unprecedented leather hunt as they walloped 304 for two in 20 overs before recording a staggering 146-run victory. The epic batting display marked only the third instance of a 300-plus score in the shortest international format while also marking the first instance in a match involving Test-playing nations.

Here is a breakdown of all the major stats and records broken in the ENG vs SA 2nd T20I

World record total

304/2 – England’s total is the highest-ever score in a T20I involving Full-Member teams, breaking India’s 297 for 6 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad in 2024. Zimbabwe’s 344 for 4 against Gambia in 2024 and Nepal’s 314 for 3 against Mongolia in 2023 are the only higher totals in T20Is.

This is the second time England had crossed 250 in a T20I, while South Africa became the first Full-Member side to concede 3 250-plus scores.

Fastest Team Milestones

12.1 – England reached 200 in only 12.1 overs, making it the fastest-ever team 200 by a Test-playing nation in T20Is. Only Bulgaria (11.5) has reached the landmark quicker in a T20I match.

England also recorded the second-fastest 150 (9 overs) and the fastest 250 (16.2) in a T20I.

Salt march in Manchester

Phil Salt smashed the fastest century by an England man in only 39 balls, surpassing Liam Livingstone’s 42-ball ton against Pakistan from 2021. Salt’s innings set a new record for the highest individual score by an England men’s player in T20 Internationals, beating his previous best of 119 against the West Indies in 2023. It also ranks as the seventh-highest score ever in men’s T20Is and the highest score against South Africa.

Powerplay carnage

100/0 – England recorded their highest-ever Powerplay score, also making it only the seventh recorded instance of a 100-plus score within the first six overs in T20Is.

2 – England openers Buttler and Salt became the first pair from a Full-Member nation to smash fifties in the same innings in less than 20 balls.

Massive win

A 146-run victory had England secure their biggest win in the format. It is, however, still only the third-biggest margin of victory in matches involving Full-Member sides, behind India’s 168-run (v NZ in 2023) and 150-run (v ENG, 2024) wins.
