Mohammed Shami has admitted to dealing with suicidal thoughts before the 2019 World Cup, while revealing how the sport saved his life.

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has revealed he was dealing with suicidal thoughts before the 2019 World Cup, but didn’t act on them because of cricket. He said he’s now grateful for his decision because otherwise he’d have missed that ICC tournament in England, where he was one of India’s best bowlers.

In 2018, he separated from his now ex-wife, Hasin Jahan. A former model, Jahan has repeatedly accused Shami of domestic violence during their marriage. The duo has been in a legal war for several months and recently, the Calcutta High Court had directed Shami to pay a certain amount in alimony to Jahan.

Socha zaroor, par hua nahin, yeh shukr hai varna World Cup miss ho jata mere sey (I did think about it, but I couldn’t do it,” Shami said about his thoughts in an interview on Aap Ki Adalat. “It’s a blessing after all, because otherwise I would have missed the World Cup). The thought came to my mind to end my life, but then I decided, this game, which gave me so much name, why should I jump to death, forgetting all this. I thought of love and affection. Then I decided, forget this and focus on my game,” he added.

Shami took 14 wickets in just four matches, including a hat-trick, at the World Cup which gave a new lease of life to his white-ball career. He carried that form upto 2023 but has since tapered off.

‘Even a terrorist wouldn’t have been levelled with so many allegations’: Shami

Shami further rued the allegedly fake allegations he has been dealing with recently, saying even terrorists aren’t labeled as such.

“Bad things are spoken about, but nowadays those things are spoken about which do not exist.. I am most scared of that. Yesterday, I was looking at a photograph, and I didn’t know when I had taken it. The number of allegations that have been levelled against me in the last 6-7 years, maybe even a terrorist would not have been levelled with so many allegations. I cannot do anything in this,” Shami said.
