Reactions continue to pour in after India and Pakistan players didn’t shake hands before or after their Asia Cup Group A clash.
A huge controversy has erupted in the aftermath of Indian players snubbing their Pakistani counterparts for the customary post-match handshake during an Asia Cup match on Sunday night. While India captain Suryakumar Yadav justified the by not shaking hands as they are here “just to play the game”, Pakistani captain Salman Agha responded by not attending the post-match presentation.
Pakistan Cricket Board has lodged a complaint with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) for India’s “unsporting” actions in Dubai. The reaction in Pakistani media has been nothing short of a meltdown with ex-cricketer Basit Ali wondering how the ICC chairman Jay Shah who is an Indian will react if this happens at the world cup.
“Ye toh Asia Cup hai na, ICC ka event jub hoga world cup, agar jub bhi haath nahi milte, toh jo ICC ka head hai, wo kya karega? Kyunki woh Indian hai. Sochne waali baat hai, agar aap haath nahi milaate toh kya hero ban jayenge? Na. Jo cricket samajhte hain wo kabhi bhi appreciate nahi karenge. (This is Asia Cup. What will the ICC head (Jay Shah) do if they do the same at World Cup? He’s an Indian. Do you think not shaking hands is heroic? Anyone who understands cricket, will never appreciate this),” Basit Ali said during a post-match TV show in Pakistan.
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal, who was also part of the panel, termed India’s actions as “petty act” and claimed this will only damage the reputations of players.
“Players’ reputation is getting damaged. It’s is a petty act,” Akmal said.
