Bangladesh’s surprise victory over Afghanistan in the two sides’ clash on Tuesday means that Group B is now finely poised, with the margins between qualification and elimination set to be decided on net run rate.

Sri Lanka currently sits atop the group, having won both of its two matches thus far, with Bangladesh in second with two wins in its three matches. Afghanistan then follows in third, with one win from two matches, while eliminated Hong Kong prop the group up, having lost all three matches.

Team Played Won Lost Points NRR
Sri Lanka 2 2 0 4 1.546
Bangladesh 3 2 1 4 -0.270
Afghanistan 2 1 1 2 2.150
Hong Kong 3 0 3 0 -2.151

The final positions in the group are contingent on the result of Thursday’s showdown between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi.

A Sri Lanka victory would confirm the group standings as they currently are, with Sri Lanka going through in top spot, and Bangladesh qualifying in second.

An Afghanistan win would make things more complicated. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan would all be tied on four points, with Afghanistan confirmed to go through with a healthy net run rate.

The second team would depend on the margin of defeat for Sri Lanka. An overwhelming defeat for Sri Lanka would mean that its current net run rate of 1.546 would drop below Bangladesh’s -0.270, while a smaller margin would mean it still qualifies in second.

India has already secured its position in the Super 4s after winning its first two matches, while the second qualifier from Group A will be the winner of Wednesday’s match between India and UAE.
