The India women’s cricket team will wear a special pink jersey during the third One-Day International against Australia in New Chandigarh on Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced ahead of the contest.
The move, a collaboration with SBI Life, is aimed at promoting breast cancer awareness. “Everyday we train for uncertainties, and this jersey is a reminder for you to be prepared. Let’s make breast self-examination a monthly routine and take a stand against breast cancer,” captain Harmanpreet Kaur said a video message released by the BCCI.
“This pink jersey is more than just a symbol. It is a call to build a life-saving habit. Together, let’s fight against breast cancer and give ourselves a hug of life,” Sneh Rana said.
In the past, the men’s team has worn special kits and caps to promote causes and pay tributes.
In 2016, during an ODI against New Zealand in Visakhapatnam, the men’s team players wore jerseys with their mother’s names inscribed on the back. In 2019, it donned camouflage caps during an ODI againt Australia in Ranchi, to pay respect to the martyrs of the Indian armed forces in a terrorist attack in Pulwama.
India will hope to mark the special occasion with a victory. The series, the final dress rehearsal ahead of the ODI World Cup starting later this month, is currently tied 1-1.
