Yashasvi Jaiswal recalls getting a “bamboo” from Rohit Sharma at silly point during the Boxing Day Test, saying the skipper’s mix of scolding and humor made it a moment to cherish.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has recalled getting bamboo (local slang for scolding) from former Test captain Rohit Sharma during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
On the opening day of the Boxing Day Test, Jaiswal was fielding at silly point with Steven Smith and Sam Konstas at the crease. When Smith attempted to play a shot, Jaiswal jumped early in fear. Rohit saw that and shouted, Gully cricket khel raha hai kya? Niche baith ke rah, jab tak ball khelega nahi, uthne ka nahi (Is this gully cricket? Till he plays a shot, don’t get up. Stay low), which was caught on the stump mic and went viral.
“When I was batting, he (Kostas) kept chatting at me. Ajeeb sa hai vo thoda. (He’s a bit weird),” Jaiswal said in an interview with Mashable India. “When I was batting, he was forcefully saying things to me. I got a bit angry and said, ‘Okay’. Nathan Lyon bowled a ball, and I gave it a whack. Actually, I hit him deliberately that day. Later, even I had to field at a silly point, and Steve Smith was lifting his bat, and I said, ‘Baap re’. It was a really flat wicket. That time, Rohit bhai ne bamboo diya tha (Then, Rohit gave me a good scolding),” he added.
“…As soon as he lifted his bat, I jumped, anticipating a cover-drive. But I knew immediately that I was in trouble as Rishabh bhai was also laughing because I had jumped early,” he added.
Jaiswal went into detail about the experience of playing under Rohit, calling it a combination of learning and fun.
“He’s different level. With him, the way he talks, you obviously get to learn a lot from him, but you always know that he’s trying to speak for your good. So his words are often inspiring, but other times it’s just pure fun.”
That was Rohit’s last series as the Test captain and player. He retired from the format in May this year and will only represent India in ODIs for the foreseeable future.
