Pitch report
Scoring runs freely has been difficult at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Teams have breached the 200-run mark just five times in 99 games, with the last instance occuring in 2022 during the Asia Cup.
This year too the venue has not aided the batters. The average first innings score in Dubai, in this tournament, so far stands at 135.
However, on Saturday, Sri Lanka posted 168 in its first innings, which was later chased down by Bangladesh with six wickets in hand, suggesting there might be some change in the nature of the wicket.
Among bowlers, the spinners have dominated at Dubai in this Asia Cup. The tweakers have nabbed 40 wickets at an average of 19 and an economy of just 6.44. On the other hand, pacers have picked 36 wickets in the same duration at an average of just under 20 and an economy rate of 8.03.
That spinners have bowled 118 overs to pacers’ 88 hints at the fact that captains attempt to strangulate the opposition’s run rate by deploying spinners.
Toss factor
Dew has played a crucial role in this Asia Cup. The spinners have conceded at 6.79 and picked 18 wickets in the second innings. In the first innings, they have conceded at 6.11 while claiming 22 wickets.
Hence, captains have preferred to win the toss and field. In the six matches, the captain winning the toss has opted to field four times. Only Pakistan has won the toss and opted to bat on two occasions, winning one and losing one.
In the last match between India and Pakistan, the latter won the toss and opted to bat, scoring just 127 runs. India chased down the target comfortably. Therefore, even on Sunday, the captain winning the toss would prefer to bowl.
