Abhishek Sharma broke Yuvraj Singh’s record with a rapid fifty against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2024, sharing a 105-run stand with Shubman Gill and earning Player of the Match honors.
Abhishek Sharma has become the talk of the cricketing world after exposing Pakistan for the second time in the ongoing Asia Cup 2024. The young Indian scored a scintillating half-century, breaking Yuvraj Singh’s record for fastest fifty against Pakistan. Before getting out for 74, he stitched a 105-run stand with vice-captain Shubman Gill which is now the highest opening partnership for India against the arch-rivals in T20Is.
For his heroics, the 25-year-old was adjudged Player of the Match, and later, in a conversation with skipper Suryakumar Yadav on BCCI.tv, he opened up about his strong camaraderie with Gill, a bond dating back to their junior cricket days.
“There’s one thing we talk about, in U-12s and we’re still talking about the same thing. As we know each other so well, I know when he is going to hit, what shot he would play. He also knows that I can hit this shot. So, it happens just through a meaningful glance,” Abhishek said.
He went on to add, “I’ve told him to tell me beforehand so that I can be ready. Sometimes you don’t expect he’ll play with soft hands. He obviously does that with his quality. But I’m working on it.”
The youngster also revealed how Suryakumar’s guidance from the boundary line reminded him of his father.
“Today I remembered my father while batting because the way you were standing and saying to take singles, he used to do the same. Sitting in front of the sightscreen, that’s where I pay the most attention. Since you were there, I think that’s why my innings got extended.”
Abhishek did not forget to acknowledge the role of his family and support staff in his success. “It was special. Whenever my family has come to support us, our team has won one-sided. But like I said in the presentation, the coach and captain’s message play a crucial role when you give such a performance,” he concluded.
