Abhishek Sharma’s ‘L’ sign celebration in India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 explained as a love message to fans, after his record-breaking half-century.
In a match where celebrations, gestures, and words are being micro-analysed, Indian opener Abhishek Sharma’s ‘L’ sign with his fingers to mark his half-century against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 super four has gone under the radar. His captain, Suryakumar Yadav, asked him to explain that after India secured a six-wicket victory in the match, and Abhishek said it was a message of love for the fans of the teams he plays for.
“This is love. ‘L’ means love. This celebration is for people who love the Indian team, and the fans who watch us in the IPL, it’s for them,” Abhishek told Suryakumar in a BCCI.tv video.
It was made more memorable for the 25-year-old because his family was present at the venue, too.
“It was special. Whenever my family has come to support us, our team has won one-sided. But like I said in the presentation, the coach and captain’s message play a crucial role when you give such a performance,” he said.
Abhishek blazed his way to a 74 off just 39 balls, the fastest and biggest innings of the game. He announced his intent by smashing Shaheen Shah Afridi for a six off the very first ball and kept the momentum going.
Despite a reprieve and a few slices of luck, he struck six boundaries and five maximums, giving India the ideal start and laying a solid foundation for the chase. He won the Player of the Match award for the knock, where he broke multiple records, too.
Further in the video, he credited Suryakumar for helping him push his knock with concentration.
“Today I remembered my father while batting because the way you were standing and saying to take singles, he used to do the same. Sitting in front of the sightscreen, that’s where I pay the most attention. Since you were there, I think that’s why my innings got extended,” Abhishek added.
