Kieron Pollard helped TKR to their fifth CPL title but expressed frustration over persistent booing from West Indies crowds despite his achievements.
Former West Indies captain Kieron Pollard was visibly frustrated with the crowd at the Providence Stadium in Guyana after his team, the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), secured a three-wicket win over Guyana Amazon Warriors to win their fifth Caribbean Premier League title.
Pollard, a World Cup-winning West Indies legend, has been booed for years in the islands of the country. At most grounds in the CPL, he’s faced with hecklers whenever he comes out to bat. There’s no clear explanation of why the West Indies, which has its major divisions, especially cultural ones between the three countries of the Caribbean, is so united in its stand against Pollard.
“It (winning the title) means a lot, but one thing I will say, there’s three countries in the Caribbean where we have played, the booing is boring now,” Pollard said. “We are still the laughing stock of cricket in the West Indies. You have a guy who has represented the entire Caribbean over a period of time, putting them on the map in the format. But we still don’t appreciate him. I’m not bitter but I feel sorry, not for myself.”
He added: “Kieron Pollard has played cricket, that’s what I know. I got the opportunity, God has given me a talent, I have represented my family and my country. I don’t politicise things, I do it because I love the game, I love the sport… This means a lot, five-time champions, but it’s quite ironic that we are still the laughing stock of cricket in the world.”
Pollard has represented and won trophies for teams from all three countries in the CPL, apart from being one of the most popular West Indian names in the world due to his cricketing expertise.
This year, he graciously gave up captaincy of the TKR franchise for Nicholas Pooran and played a big role in the side’s title charge, despite having one of the oldest squads in the league.
