The Yorkshire CC has announced Harold Dennis “Dickie” Bird, one of cricket’s most iconic umpires and former club president, has died peacefully at home at the age of 92.

The Yorkshire County Cricket Club on Monday confirmed the passing of Harold Dennis ‘Dickie’ Bird MBE OBE, one of the most celebrated and respected figures in world cricket. Bird died peacefully at home at the age of 92.

Born in Barnsley in 1933, Bird played first-class cricket for Yorkshire and Leicestershire before an injury cut short his playing career. He went on to become one of the most recognised umpires in the history of the game, standing in 66 Test matches and 69 ODIs, including three World Cup finals. Known for his integrity, humour and distinctive style, he earned admiration from players and fans worldwide.

Bird also served as President of Yorkshire CCC from 2014, a period in which the club won two County Championship titles. He was honoured with an MBE in 1986 and an OBE in 2012 for his contribution to cricket.

Yorkshire CCC said Bird will be remembered as “one of the greatest characters in the club’s history,” and extended condolences to his family and friends. Memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.
