Manav Suthar has impressed selectors with a five-wicket haul for India A against Australia A, putting him in contention for a maiden Test call-up.
The Indian selectors have been keeping a close eye on Rajasthan’s left-arm spinner Manav Suthar and he’s in contention for a maiden international call-up for next month’s two-match Test series with West Indies.
The 23-year-old Suthar made his first-class debut in February 2022 and has since taken 95 wickets from 23 matches at an average of 27.50. He has four five-wicket hauls to his name as well.
The highly rated spinner has impressed the selectors with his performance in the ongoing 2nd Unofficial Test between India A and Australia A. He picked up a five-wicket haul in Australia A’s first innings on the opening day of the contest being held at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
As per various reports, the selectors want Suthar to be groomed by someone like Ravindra Jadeja. “He’s been on the radar for some time and the way he bowled against a strong Australia A batting unit has only strengthened his case. The idea is to start grooming him alongside senior spinners like Ravindra Jadeja,” Hindustan Times quoted a source as saying.
Suthar has also played 17 List A games in which he has 22 wickets at an average of 29.40. In 15 T20s, he has 10 wickets at an economy of 7.05.
Selection Meeting Today
The Ajit Agarkar-led Indian men’s team selection committee will meet virtually today to pick a 15-man squad for the West Indies series starting October 2 in Ahmedabad. There won’t be wholesale changes to the squad that toured England earlier this year. Rishabh Pant is still recovering from an injury he picked during the England tour and so will miss out. Dhruv Jurel will take his place as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter.
Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah has reportedly told the BCCI of his availability for the two matches. Currently, the pace spearhead is representing India in the ongoing Asia Cup in the UAE.
