Sri Lanka batting coach Thilina Kandamby says his batters will need to play with a positive mindset to tackle the spin threat from India in their inconsequential Asia Cup match here on Friday.

With two losses in as many games in Super Fours, Sri Lanka is already out of the race for the final, while India would look to fine-tune its combination before the summit clash on Sunday.

The spin troika of the Men in Blue — Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel — has posed plenty of problems for the batters so far in the tournament.

“We have discussed it, but everything said and done, our guys have been playing spin regularly. They know how to handle the spinners irrespective of the conditions. Having said that, they have some good world-class bowlers in their line-up.

“If our guys have a positive mindset, we can overcome that (challenge),” Kandamby said on the eve of the game.

Asked what went wrong for them in the Super Fours after topping the group stage, the former Sri Lanka batter added, “In the second round, the game against Bangladesh, 168 on that track was defendable. They played better cricket than us.

“In the Pakistan game, we were outplayed in all three departments,” Kandamby added, also talking about the over-reliance on openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis.

“They (openers) have been playing well for the last one and a half years. But on and off, we have had bad days, especially when we batted first. Some of the guys have also been playing well. Kamindu and Dasun also got half-centuries.”
