After Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer’s decision to take a break from red-ball cricket, the Senior Men’s Selection Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Thursday an updated squad of India A for the three-match one-day series against Australia A and the Rest of India (ROI) squad for the Irani Cup.
Iyer has been appointed the captain for India A and will lead the three-match One-Day series against Australia, set to be played in Kanpur. Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar, who was initially announced as the captain of India A for the first One-Day and vice-captain for the remaining two games, has now been replaced from the white-ball squad and was made the captain of ROI against Vidarbha in the Irani Cup.
As reported by The Indian Express, Iyer had written to BCCI seeking a break in the red-ball cricket due to stiffness and fatigue issues in his back, and the cricket governing body in India has acknowledged his request, accommodating him in the white ball squad instead of red-ball.
BCCI released a statement confirming this development. “Mr Shreyas Iyer has informed the BCCI of his decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. Having undergone back surgery in the UK and managed his recovery well, he has recently experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format. He wishes to utilise this period to build endurance, body resilience and work on his fitness. In view of his decision, he was not considered for selection for the Irani Cup,” the statement reads.
Iyer also pulled out of the second unofficial Test against Australia that got underway in Lucknow on Tuesday.
Tilak Verma, who was supposed to lead India A for the last two matches vs Australia A, has now been made the deputy of Iyer. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad will be the vice captain of ROI in the Irani Cup. India A will play their matches in Kanpur starting from September 30, while the Irani Cup will be played against Vidarbha, the champions of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25, in Nagpur from October 1.
