India captain Suryakumar Yadav and Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf have been found guilty of breaching the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct at the ongoing Asia Cup in the UAE.
After the hearings that concluded Friday, match referee Richie Richardson has fined both players 30 per cent of their match fee, while another Pakistan player Sahibzada Farhan has been let off with a warning for his gun celebration after reaching 50.
After Suryakumar’s remarks about the terror attack in Pahalgam and dedication of India’s win over Pakistan to the Indian armed forces, the Pakistan Cricket Board filed a complaint with the ICC, alleging that the Indian captain made political comments.
On Thursday, Richardson had summoned Suryakumar for a hearing where the Indian captain had pleaded not guilty. The Indian Express understands that an official confirmation from the ICC will arrive only post the conclusion of the Asia Cup as India seems to have filed an appeal. The date of the appeal hasn’t been formalised yet.
The tension between the two teams at this Asia Cup started with Suryakumar deciding not to shake hands with Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha at the toss. Even after the conclusion of the game, India refused to shake hands with their opponents and the tensions spilled over to the Super 4s match last Sunday. During that ill-tempered contest, there were plenty of verbal exchanges between the players too, and the Indian team filed a complaint against Rauf and Farhan for their actions.
Rauf, who was involved in a verbal altercation with India openers Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, also made gestures with a set of Indian fans that went viral, and was also found guilty by Richardson. Speaking at the conclusion of that game, Abhishek had accused Pakistan players of “coming at us for no reason”.
Having already played two tense contests, India and Pakistan are set to meet each other for the third time in as many weeks. Pakistan’s win over Bangladesh on Thursday means – for the first time in Asia Cup’s 41-year history – there will be an India vs Pakistan final on Sunday.
