Karun Nair reacts to his omission from India’s Test team for the West Indies series, sharing thoughts on his England performance.
Star India batter Karun Nair has said that he doesn’t have a lot to say about his omission from India’s Test squad for the two-match home series against the West Indies, adding that although he didn’t score the big hundreds in England, he thought he had contributed to the team.
Sitting in his room in Bengaluru, Nair, who scored 205 runs across four Tests against England at an average of 25.62, awaited the selection announcement.
While announcing the 15-member team at the Indian team hotel in Dubai, Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar dropped elaborate hints that Nair and Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran are no longer in the scheme of things.
“Yes, I did expect the selection. I don’t know what to say. No words. I don’t have any much comments to make. It is very difficult for me to answer,” Nair said while speaking to The Times of India.
Despite his previous poor returns, Nair was given another opportunity in the fifth Test at the Oval, where he scored 57 runs off 109 deliveries.
Nair’s knock was the highest in the first innings and played a key role in helping India reach a total of 224.
“You should probably ask the selectors on what they’re thinking. Only thing is, in the last Test also, I got a 50 when no one else scored in the first innings. I thought I contributed to the team and especially in the last game that we won,” Nair said.
While speaking on the star Indian batter, Agarkar was clear that he did not make full use of chances, scoring one half-century in eight innings during the tour of England.
“We feel Padikkal offers a little bit more at this point and I wish we could give everyone 15 or 20 Tests. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way,” Agarkar said.
When asked why Sudharsan got the nod when he and Nair had a similar run in England, Agarkar said: “It’s a little bit about continuity. There were a few changes at No.3 because of the combination that we played.”
