On the fourth ball of the Super Over in the India-Sri Lanka Asia Cup 2025 match, Shanaka got both caught and run out, but still he was given not out by the third umpire.
Dasun Shanaka came out to bat for Sri Lanka against India in the Super Over of the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4s match on Friday, September 26. On the fourth ball of the Super Over bowled by Arshdeep Singh, Shanaka was declared caught behind by the on-field umpire after the left-arm pacer appealed for the dismissal.
Shanaka challenged the on-field umpire’s decision, and in the DRS, there was no spike, so he survived.
The third umpire’s decision to declare Shanaka not out created confusion on the field, as, apart from getting caught behind, he also got run out. So even if there was no spike and he survived the caught-behind appeal, he should have been given a run-out.
But according to the rules, as explained by Cricbuzz, Shanaka was given not out because he was given out caught behind first, and since he reviewed that decision, the ball became dead. The first decision always stands, and when it is given out by the umpire at the bowler’s end, the ball is dead, and that’s why Shanaka escapes from being run out.
Despite getting a lifeline on the fourth ball of the Super Over, Shanaka failed to make the most of it and got out on the next ball. In an attempt to play a big shot, he was caught by Jitesh Sharma in the third-man area.
The former white-ball captain was the second Sri Lankan batter to get out in the Super Over, and as a result, after his wicket, the Sri Lankan innings ended.
Sri Lankan batters faced five balls in the Super Over but could only manage to score 2 runs for the loss of 2 wickets.
India chased down the target of 3 runs on the first ball to secure a memorable win over Sri Lanka and extend their winning run to six matches in the 2025 Asia Cup.
The Indian team will next take the field on Sunday, September 28. In the final of the Asia Cup 2025, Team India will face arch-rivals Pakistan. The match between India and Pakistan is scheduled to take place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
India have already defeated twice in the Asia Cup 2025, and on Sunday, Surya’s men would like to complete the hat-trick of wins and lift the Asia Cup trophy for the record-extending ninth time in 41 years.
